Last month, I had the pleasure of attending the Welcoming the Whales annual ceremony held in La Push by the Quileute Tribe and Quileute Tribal School. The ceremony starts at First Beach with a performance by the children and an offering provided by the tribe's elders. The ceremony continues at the Cultural Center, or Akilat, where the performance continues and food is provided. The whole event was well attended, and I felt very included even as an outsider! I left with various items that the Tribal School children had created for the event to hand out as parting gifts to attendees. It was genuinely lovely, and I look forward to attending again next year!
