Birdwatching with Friends!

One species has shown up on every single Wednesday-morning bird walk at the Dungeness River Nature Center for the past 25 years: the Song Sparrow. I learned that — and a lot more — on a recent birdwatching outing with a friend, joining the weekly guided walk hosted by the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society. The walk starts at the Nature Center, crosses the iconic Railroad Bridge, and follows the Olympic Discovery Trail west for about a mile — equal parts nature lesson and a chance to meet locals who love this place as much as the birds in it. Afterward, I sat down with Bob Boekelheide, the Nature Center's first director and now Bird Count Compiler for OPAS, to talk about what makes Sequim one of the best birding spots in the state.
