About Tonya Humiston
I help complex organizations communicate clearly through narrative, design systems, and visual storytelling.
My work connects strategy, product, and communication—bringing clarity to ideas that need to be understood and trusted.
My work spans apparel and product design, brand and visual communication, data storytelling, and strategic design. Across it all, a consistent thread runs through my work: I study how systems function—whether a technical garment, a research report, or an organizational message—and design ways to make them understandable and useful to others.
Before entering the design field, I served overseas as a linguist in the U.S. Army. That experience shaped how I approach communication: listening closely, synthesizing information, and translating complexity across audiences.
Early in my career, I worked in technical apparel and gear design, where communicating products to overseas factories required a deep understanding of construction and precise documentation of every component. That foundation continues to guide my work today: understand the system first, then design the clearest way to communicate it.
Over time, my focus expanded from product to narrative—translating complex work into visual communication, brand systems, and strategic storytelling. I’ve partnered with scientists, educators, product teams, and organizational leaders to bring clarity to ideas that matter.
I’m energized by cross-functional collaboration and building environments where ideas and knowledge flow easily. Great work rarely comes from one discipline alone, and I enjoy helping teams connect their perspectives to create something stronger together.
At the heart of it, I enjoy making things clearer, more engaging, and more meaningful for the people they’re meant to serve.
