About Tonya Humiston

I am an experienced creative with a background in multiple disciplines of design: apparel design, product design,  graphic design, marketing design, data and infographics, and illustration. I moved into the creative field after serving as a linguist in the military overseas. My favorite parts of design?

• the problem-solving nature of it. I am a problem-spotter, and I love having a method of thinking that resolves those problems.

• design thinking. You don't have to solve the problem correctly the first time. Iterate. Stay flexible. Bring in others. Change your perspective.

• the creative expression. The outward-facing aesthetic expression of design is beautiful.

• the company of fellow creatives. Creatives are a fun group! 

• the drive for innovation, the push for 'new'.

 

Speaking of innovation, I worked alongside design researchers for the first time while working at REI and decided to return to school for my master's in Design Management at SCAD to learn more about applying design research and strategy for greater innovation. I enjoy thinking big picture and collaborating with cross-functional partners. It's better for the product, and it's more fun! I also love team-building and building a sense of community that allows "knowledge flow" to happen. I believe in building an interesting and solid "talent stack" to lean into as I push my limits and continue to grow on other fronts.
