Kayaking with Friends!

This was a much-anticipated outing with my friend Jon Almquist! I had been trying to arrange a paddling trip with him since last summer, and I'm so glad I hung in there. We settled on a day that worked for both our schedules — but then the weather threatened to get in the way. A strong westerly wind was forecast to kick up 3–5' waves in the straits. I've put my feet in that water before. No, thank you — I had no interest in being buffeted by waves and fighting to make headway. Living on a peninsula, though, we had options. We considered Hood Canal, Lake Crescent, and Port Townsend as calmer alternatives. Port Townsend won out — it fit our timeline, and it's where I could rent a kayak. A two-hour rental turned out to be perfect — enough time to paddle into downtown, take a coffee-and-cookie break on the shore, and paddle back to Fort Worden. It was, in the end, exactly the outing I'd been waiting almost a year for.
